Israele è lo Stato Nazione del popolo ebraico.
Caro Andrea, ho bisogno di dire la mia su questa nuova esecranda situazione che si è venuta a creare nello Stato d’Israele. Con te mi sono confrontato e confidato sulla questione Palestinese, sugli insediamenti illegali, sul futuro di questa nazione che sento vicina e lontana, e questa novità mi angoscia come non mai.
Israele è lo stato nazione del popolo ebraico. Una frase che sembra logica, quasi di buon senso. Poi si prevede che gli insediamenti ebraici debbano espandersi, che l’ebraico è la lingua dello stato.
Queste parole risuonano in una legge del 2018, non sono state concepite o scritte nel periodo di arrivo e consolidamento della presenza ebraica in Palestina, e allora quelle stesse frasi assumono un significato diverso, e temibile. Perché dal 1948 al 2018 un milione di persone che vivevano su quella terra che si chiamò Stato di Israele, non quindi Eretz Israele, decise di non fuggire, e da allora sono cittadini dello Stato di Israele, ma con meno diritti dei nativi ebrei, o di chi – ebreo – ricorre alla legge del ritorno, garanzia di accoglienza in Israele per chiunque ne faccia richiesta…fino a quando ai rifugiati ebrei dall’Etiopia non sono stati offerti soldi in cambio del loro ritorno nel Paese da cui fuggivano, o verso altri stati desiderosi di accoglierli, o – nel caso de loro rifiuto – la detenzione in centri sorvegliati.
Che senso ha, oggi, affermare Israele come stato nazione del popolo ebraico, a fronte di una demografia che quel concetto lo nega, o almeno lo mette in discussione? E a fronte di una situazione non pacificata nei Territori Occupati, di cui innumerevoli dichiarazione dell’ONU dichiara la natura non assegnabile allo Stato di Israele, ma che si stanno vieppiù riempiendo di insediamenti illegali di coloni ebrei che ricattano qualsiasi governo israeliano ma che questa legge sembra incoraggiare? Insomma, che fine fa il carattere democratico di un Paese che definisce ontologicamente una differenza tra i suoi abitanti?
Netanyahu ha chiamato in causa Herzl, il fondatore del sionismo, dicendo che questa legge realizza il suo insegnamento. Negli anni scorsi, molti esponenti della sinistra hanno sostenuto che il sionismo fosse parte integrante della storia del movimento operaio. Si tratta di una forzatura, perché indubbiamente nel sionismo convissero a lungo anime diverse, unite solo dall’impegno di creare uno stato per un popolo disperato (diaspora) e discriminato, ma al cui interno ci fu per molti anni (e fino alla metà degli anni ’70 del ‘900) un’egemonia di chi da socialista ebreo puntò a fare di Israele il luogo degli ebrei con forti venature socialiste (i Kibbutzim), ma non c’è dubbio che nel sionismo, accanto alla matrice socialista, convisse una forte corrente nazionalista (Jabotinsky, e poi Menachem Begin), che giunse al potere dello stato a metà degli anni ’70. Netanyahu è il figlio di questa corrente, ormai maggioritaria nello Stato di Israele.
E allora la domanda drammatica per un ebreo comunista della diaspora, che non ha mai sentito venire meno il legame con la sua storia, aldilà del proprio ateismo, è se ci si è resi conto, nonostante le tante voci che in Israele e nella diaspora si sono levate contro questa legge nei due anni in cui essa è stata in discussone, cosa cambiava nella natura dello stato se lo si definisce esplicitamente su base confessionale: noi tutti siamo stati contro Orban, il neo dittatore ungherese o il governo polacco quando hanno giustificato le loro inaccettabili politiche securitarie e i loro muri con l’obiettivo di mantenere i loro Paesi “bianchi e cristiani”. C’è qualcosa di diverso nella legge approvata?
Mi si risponderà che è una contraddizione insita nella stessa storia di Israele, patri di un popolo definito esclusivamente su basi culturali/religiose. E’ vero, e non c’è bisogno di ripercorrere la storia delle discriminazioni fino alla tragedia della Shoah per ricordarmelo.
Ma il punto è non tanto se fosse giusto creare, e sappiamo con quante tragedie, un luogo di rifugio per un popolo perseguitato. Il punto è sull’oggi: può una potenza nucleare, e spesso si dimentica questo pericoloso dato, e una economia tra le più dinamiche del mondo definirsi in modo da replicare la discriminazione? E “tollerare” nei propri confini (peraltro mai definiti) chi è diverso, per giunta sul piano spirituale? Ci si rende conto di quale abisso si spalanca? Così facendo ci si omologa ad altri stati confessionali che Israele stesso definisce non democratici. Quanti saranno i cittadini non ebrei ad essere definiti inferiori? Quanti sono i musulmani cittadini dello stesso stato? Do un numero che ci deve far riflettere: gli arabi in Israele sono il 20% della popolazione, cioè 1.413.500. i cristiani sono il 9% così come i Drusi, 9%.
Gideon Levy su Haaretz ha usato parole terribili, scrivendo che con questa legge finalmente non ci si vergogna più – in Israele! – di teorizzare l’aparthaeid, strappando così definitivamente il velo dell’”unica democrazia nel Medio Oriente”.
Le parole sono pietre e colpiscono al cuore, sta a quanti hanno a cuore la storica unità del pensiero ebraico con le lotte contro qualsiasi discriminazione e persecuzione di alzare la voce, senza paura.
Eccoti, caro Andrea il mio pensiero e le mie emozioni da Ebreo della diaspora.

Caro Claudio, nel tuo accorato testo ho letto e sentito tutta la tua sofferenza sia fisica che intellettuale di fronte a questa nuova, sconvolgente, legge fratricida. Sei costretto a prendere atto che il cammino verso un futuro giusto e leale, è ancora lungo. È come se il tempo ci avesse riportato a dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, là dove si cercava una via di salvezza e di fuga agli obbrobri demagogici del nazismo e cercare un luogo dove poter estirpare tali nefandezze, e invece, eccoci qui a ripercorrere le stesse strade degli aguzzini che inflissero le peggiori atrocità ai nonni degli attuali smemorati. Come uomo e come appartenente ala cultura anche ebraica, soffri queste batture d’arresto storiche. Una volta i nazisti che sterminano fisicamente la metà del problema, poi un capo di stato che dovrebbe portare sulla pelle le stigmate democratiche e dire “mai più”, rivela tutto il suo essere nazista. Quale paradossale contraddizione!
Un popolo che dimentica le lezioni della storia, aggressivo, (vedi i coloni), che rinnega il suo passato, non ha futuro. Giusto è il tuo monito-appello ad alzare la voce. Questo non devono farlo solo gli intellettuali e democratici ebrei, ma tutti coloro che vogliono far progredire il cammino della civiltà dell’umanità stessa.
Sappi che non sei solo!

Dear Andrea,
I have to tell you my feelings on this new execrable situation in the State of Israel. With you I often talked on the Palestinian question, on the illegal settlements, on the future of this nation that I feel both near and far away, and this novelty distresses me as ever.
Israel is the state nation of the Jewish people. A sentence that seems logic, almost good sense. Then it goes on saying that the Jewish settlements must expand, and that Hebrew is the official language of the state.
These words written and approved by Parliament in a 2018 law, not been conceived or written in the period of arrival and consolidation of the Jewish presence in Palestine: so the same sentences assume a different, and dangerous meaning. Because from 1948 to 2018 a million people who lived on the land called State of Israel, not Eretz Israel, decided not to run away, and since then they are citizens of the State of Israel, but with less rights than the native Jews, or any diapora Jew who applies to the law of the return, that guarantees him o her reception in Israel …till it comes to the Jewish refugees from Ethiopia to whom money has been offered in exchange for their return in the country from which they fled, or towards other countries willing to welcome them, or in case of refusal of either alternative, detention in guarded centers.
What is the sense, today, to affirm Israel as the state nation of the Jewish people, while demography puts it in question? Not to mention the not reconciled situation in the Occupied Territories, of which innumerable declaration of the U.N. declares the non assignable nature to the State of Israel, but are more and more full with illegal Jewish settlements whose inhabitants blackmail any Israeli government but that this law seems to encourage? In short, the democratic nature of a Nation is at stake if it defines itself discriminating essentially part of its own citizens.
Netanyahu has quoted Herzl, the founder of the Zionism, saying that this law realizes its teaching. In the last years, many leaders of the left have argued that Zionism was integral part of the history of the workers’ movement. It is in fact a misled argument, because undoubtedly in the Zionism different souls cohabited for a long time, kept together only by the goal to create a state for a desperate (diaspora) and discriminated people, but within Zionism there was for many years (till the mid ’70 of the past century) a hegemony of Jewish socialists who aimed to make Israel the place of Jews with strong socialist structures (the Kibbutzims), but there is no doubt that in Zionism, close to the socialist matrix, a strong nationalistic culture cohabited(Jabotinsky, and then Menachem Begin), that came to power in the mid ’70s. Netanyahu is the offspring of this culture, by now majority in the State of Israel.
And so the dramatic question for a communist Jew of the diaspora, who has never felt to cut the bond with his own history, no matter his own atheism, is if it has been understood, despite so many voices in Israel and in the diaspora raised against this law in the two years during which it has been discussed, that the nature of the state does change dramatically if it is expressly defined on a confessional basis: all of us have been against Orban, the Hungarian semi dictator or the Polish government for their unacceptable political actions, and against their justification for building walls in order to keep their countries “white and Christians.” Is there something different in the approved law?
Many will object that it is an inherent contradiction in the history of Israel, the State for a population exclusively defined on cultural / religious basis: true, and there is no need recall the history of discriminations up to the tragedy of the Shoah to me. But the point is not so much if it was correct to create, and we know with how many tragedies, a shelter for a persecuted people. The point is now: can a nuclear power, and an economy among the more dynamic of the world, define itself so that discrimination is at his heart? And “to tolerate” in its borders (by the way, never clearly defined!) someone who is different, and the difference lies on the spiritual basis? Do they realize the hollow that opens up? People arabian 20% , 1.413.500. Cristhian 9%, Drusi 9%.
Gideon Levy on Haaretz used terrible words, writing that with this law finally there is no shame – in Israel! – to theorize aparthaeid, by so doing definitely tearing the veil of the “only democracy in the Middle East.”
Words are stones and they strike to the heart, so those who have believe in the historical unity of the Jewish thought with the struggles against any discrimination and persecution must raise their voice without fear.
Here you are, dear Andrea, my thought and my Hebrew emotions of the diaspora.

Dear Claudio,
in yours grieved text I have read and heard your suffering in front of this new, upsetting, fratricidal law. You are forced to accept that the way toward a humane and loyal future is still long. It is as if the time had brought us back to the end of the second world war, where a way of salvation and escape was searched in response to the demagogic infamies of the Nazism and to look for a place for eradicating such iniquities, and instead, here we are again on the same roads of the jailers that inflicted the worse atrocities to the grandparents of the actual rulers. As a human being belonging also to Jewish culture you suffer these historical drawbacks. First, Nazis physically exterminate almost half the Jewish population, now a head of state who should bear deep in mind the democratic stigmates and say ” no more”, reveals his Nazi being. What paradoxical contradiction!
A nation that forgets the lessons of history, aggressive, that (see the settlers!) denies his/her past, doesn’t have future. Your warning-appeal to raise your voice is correct: not intellectuals and Jewish democrats but all those people who want to make to progress the walk of civilization and humanity.
